Vice President Radhakrishnan Releases 16 Books Celebrating Tamil Heritage

These publications, which highlight the wealth of Tamil civilization through its literature, philosophy, architecture, and culture, were unveiled by the Vice President of India, C.P. Radhakrishnan, at Uparashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi. These books have been published by the Publications Division of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India.
Addressing the gathering, the Vice President highlighted that Tamil is one of the oldest classical languages of the world and stated that the new books released indicate the richness of India’s culture. He went on to add that even though India is a multilingual and multicultural country, the civilization of the country binds it together.
In emphasizing the importance of reading, Radhakrishnan stressed that young people should give at least one hour a day to reading since good reading habit is necessary in order to save our heritage and create an informed society. It was also emphasized that cultural development must go hand-in-hand with economic development.
Praising the contributions of the Tamil language in enriching the culture of India through its literary heritage, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw, who was present at the occasion, expressed happiness that the published books would help in acknowledging the same. The Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, L. Murugan also spoke on the occasion.
One such release is an exclusive edition of the book on Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, written in English, Hindi, and Tamil to mark the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram. The set also contains books on holy places, temple architecture, great thinkers, music, science, and social reform, thus making the heritage of Tamil more available to the reading public.
